Guided Hike/Program - Adults, 16+
This program is canceled due to the very hot temperatures forecasted. Please check the calendar for future programs. Do you have an adventurous spirit? Do you enjoy long hikes in nature but yearn to learn more about what you see? Join Naturalist Rob Pickett for a wild wander through Larimer County Open Spaces. These 4–5-mile hikes will reveal fascinating aspects of the local flora, fauna, geology, and landscapes, making it not just a physical journey but an educational one too! Learn insights that you can carry forward into your future outdoor explorations and deepen your connection with nature while expanding your understanding of the environment around you. You'll hike a 3.9 miles along the Shoshone Trail (dirt surface, east to moderate). Bringing binoculars is optional. A spirit of adventure is a must have! Meet at main trailhead for Ramsay-Shockey Open Space. Carpooling is recommended as parking is limited. Program is free, but registration and parking permit are required. Parking permit can be purchased from the entrance station or office on County Road 31 before proceeding to Ramsay-Shockey Open Space. Participants should bring: Sun protection (sunglasses, hat, sunscreen) Wear comfortable hiking/walking shoes (closed-toe recommended) Water Insect repellant Lunch & Snacks Layers to accommodate changing weather and temperatures Backpack (to carry it all) Weather dependent.

Former supervisor of gardeners and greenhouses at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, I've spent my adult life learning about the lush eastern deciduous forests of the Appalachians and leading monthly natural history hikes for the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. Moved to Fort Collins in 2019 and learning about this new dry habitat.
