Fence Removal for Wildlife Safety- National Public Lands Day

 09/21/2023  |  07:30 AM - 10:30 AM
Soderberg Trailhead at Horsetooth Mountain  |  Registration Required

Volunteer Opportunity - Adults, 16+

Help to make our open spaces safer for wildlife! Parts of Horsetooth Mountain Open Space were once a working ranch. This means there is old barbed-wire fence that needs to be removed. This type of fence is not wildlife safe and we would like to remove it to keep the property sustainable. Volunteers will remove barbed wire from t-posts, roll up the wire, remove t-posts from the ground, & stack materials in a designated area for staff to retrieve later. All metal collected will be recycled. Volunteers must be 16 or older. Volunteers must be able to walk ~0.5 mile on dirt road to reach the start of the fence line. Then the group will work down the fence line removing the barbed wire and making piles of the materials. Volunteers will be using fence pliers & t-post pullers; will need to be able to bend, squat, stoop, & squeeze. Moderate physical level. Volunteers will be working in tall grass with the possibility of ticks and snakes. We recommend long pants & insect repellant. There are no restrooms at this site. THIS EVENT MAY END EARLY DUE TO HEAT. Volunteers will need to bring: Sun protection (sunglasses, hat, sunscreen) - little to no shade at project site Work gloves (some will be provided) Wear closed-toe shoes & long pants - will be working in tall grass Water & re-fillable water bottle Insect repellant Snacks Clothing appropriate for the weather Backpack (to carry it all) Hand sanitizer (optional)
