Guided Hike/Program - Mixed Ages

What’s in a name? A whole lot if your name is Horsetooth Mountain and your profile is part of Fort Collins’ City logo. In this 2-hour guided hike, we’ll explore the geology, topography, and ecology of one of our area’s most iconic natural landmarks. As we hike through the lower part of Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, we’ll dig into the science of deep time and the ancient geologic events that shaped the dramatic foothills landscape we see today. We’ll also reflect on creation stories passed down through generations by some of the area’s earliest residents. Together, these scientific and cultural perspectives offer a deeper appreciation for the beauty of Horsetooth Mountain and its surrounding terrain. This program is best for Ages 12 yrs. - adult We will meet at the main parking lot for Horsetooth Mountain Open Space. Carpooling is recommended as parking is limited. Program is free, but this location requires a $10 day use fee if you do not already have a yearly entrance permit; if you would like to join without paying the fee, you can check out a Discover Pack from a local library or one of our offices. Pit toilets and potable water available at the trailhead. Hike: You will be hiking 1-1.5 miles on South Ridge/lowermost Horsetooth Rock trail, we will not be hiking to the top. This trail is rated Moderate. • Steeper hills and switchbacks and some moderate obstacles • Roots, imbedded rocks, little shade Participants should bring: • Sun protection (sunglasses, hat, sunscreen) • Wear comfortable hiking/walking shoes (closed-toe recommended) • Water • Insect repellant • Lunch & Snacks • Clothing appropriate for the weather • Backpack (to carry it all) Weather dependent.
